Security Checkpoint Expansion

The passenger security checkpoint expansion at Midway was completed in 2020. This project expanded the existing passenger bridge over Cicero Avenue from 50 feet to 400 feet, which increased the queuing area to 80,000 square feet.

This update provides a streamlined, single checkpoint area that’s eight times wider than the previous security hall, with 17 operational screening lanes. The new lanes doubled passenger throughput from 2,500 to 5,000 passengers per hour, with room for future expansion.

The new checkpoint and screening technology will support the City’s efforts to optimize wait times even as passenger volumes continue to increase at Midway. Additionally, the expansion’s reconfiguration of the security area, shifting the security screening lanes onto the expanded bridge, reallocated approximately 18,000 square feet of existing space that is now available for concessions redevelopment.
